GOND PAINTING

About The Craft

Gond art is rooted in folk tales and culture. Gond paintings depict almost every aspect of the tribe's lives. Local flora, fauna, gods & goddesses, celebrations, festivals, folk-tales and myths are all represented through their art, making story-telling a strong element in their paintings. Gond art is believed to be an offering in worship of nature, based on the Gond belief that good image ushers in good luck and helps ward off evil. The art form is characterized by the imaginative use of lines and dots, highlighting a sense of balance and symmetry. The paintings are bright and colourful, painted with natural colours derived from charcoal, soil, plant sap, leaves and cow dung.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@craftvillage.org.in in case you are unable to find an answer to your question.

Gond art is practised by the Pradhan community of Madhya Pradesh. They are younger brothers of the Gondi tribe who used to play the role of chiefs of the village. This art is presented through narrative. Gondi tribe is one of the largest tribes in India, residing in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh.

Nowadays, acrylic colours are used in painting this art as it is made on paper or cloth, but initially, it was primarily made with natural colours when it was drawn on stones.

One would take around two and a half to three years to learn Gond art when it is practised daily for one to two hours.  In Gond art, we create verbal narratives through drawing without which its depiction is nearly impossible.

Gond art is inspired by nature. There are more than 750 tribes in this community and all of them have unique stories. These stories are represented through sketches.
