The Kavad Story Book reimagines the traditional Kavad (wandering shrine) into a contemporary folding and pop-up narrative format, allowing sacred and secular stories to unfold through painted panels and movable structures. By transforming a declining ritual object into modular storybooks, pop-up books, and folding shrines, the project preserves the essence of narrative storytelling while making it relevant for modern homes, children, and global audiences.
The Madhubani Stationery Collection adapts the iconic Mithila art form into gift cards, notebooks, packaging graphics, and writing accessories, drawing on themes of love, knowledge, and celebration traditionally associated with the Ram–Sita wedding and Goddess Saraswati. This approach moves Madhubani beyond wall art into everyday cultural objects, creating products that are personal, meaningful, and deeply rooted in Indian visual storytelling.
The Zero-Waste Packaging initiative applies circular design thinking to everyday products by transforming packaging into reusable, collectible, and functional craft objects. Inspired by India’s traditional culture of reuse and sustainability, the packaging becomes part of the product lifecycle rather than waste—reducing environmental impact while adding aesthetic, emotional, and functional value for consumers.
The Shadow Puppetry collection transforms traditional leather puppets into contemporary lighting, décor, and interactive objects that use light, shadow, and motion to tell stories. By converting a nearly obsolete performance art into modular lamps, lit-up figures, keychains, and dramatic shadow installations, the project gives this ancient craft a new role in modern interiors and global design markets.
The Wooden Birds Collection reinvents a simple decorative skill into a functional dining, kitchen, and tableware ecosystem. By introducing bird-inspired dining sets, kitchen accessories, table objects, and giftware, the project converts a low-value craft into design-led lifestyle products that can be produced at scale for contemporary homes and hospitality spaces.
Inspired by Tholpavakoothu, the traditional leather shadow-puppet theatre of Kerala, this product range transforms sacred storytelling figures into contemporary lifestyle and automobile accessories. Intricately cut leather forms are adapted into tray sets, key rings, car hangings, dashboard icons, and decorative god and goddess motifs, allowing heritage art to travel into everyday life and modern mobility spaces.

Craft Village was the implementing partner for the prestigious ABCD (Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design) project at the Red Fort, focused on the revival and contemporary transformation of the ancient Camel Belt Braiding (Ply-Split) craft. Led by master craftsperson Errol Nelson Pires, former Professor at the National Institute of Design (NID), the project worked closely with traditional artisans from Rajasthan to document, revive, and reimagine this endangered desert craft Red Fort.
Through intensive design research, experimentation, and skill development, the project transformed traditional camel belts into a wide range of contemporary products — including fashion garments, bags, lighting, accessories, and sculptural forms — moving the craft from flat, utilitarian belts into 2-D and 3-D design applications for modern interiors and fashion Red Fort Intermediate Document. Artisans were trained in new materials, colours, and production methods while preserving the core hand-braiding technique, enabling them to create market-ready, high-value products.


Craft Village was the lead implementing agency for the Water Hyacinth Design & Craft Innovation Project incubated at ABCD (Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design), Red Fort, New Delhi in collaboration with IGNCA and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The project aimed to transform water hyacinth — one of the world’s most invasive aquatic weeds — into a high-value, sustainable craft material, creating new livelihoods while restoring fragile ecosystems.
Working with artisan clusters from Assam and the North East, Craft Village led a design-driven revival of water hyacinth by developing new raw-material processes, weaving, braiding, fabric and board applications, and modular construction systems Final Document. Artisans from diverse backgrounds — weaving, furniture making, basketry, woodwork, and grass crafts — were trained to create contemporary products for the global market, including lighting systems, floor tiles, furniture, stools, planters, couches, water-hyacinth boards and fabrics.
Craft Village was appointed by KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd. under the mandate of SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India) to lead the Design Mentorship and Creative Intervention Program for the Bargarh Ikat Handloom Cluster in Odisha. Bargarh is one of India’s most significant Ikat clusters, home to over 12,000 looms and renowned for Sambalpuri Ikat, a heritage textile celebrated for its intricate Bandha (tie), Ranga (dye), and Bunakari (weaving) process and the only weaving district in India to have received 45 National Awards, 52 State Awards, two Sant Kabir Awards, and two Padma Shri honours KPMG Bargarh Report. Despite this legacy, the cluster was facing declining demand, outdated designs, and limited access to contemporary markets, making design and product diversification a critical need.
Through extensive field research, village-level diagnostics, and hands-on design mentorship, Craft Village led a structured program across multiple villages and producer groups, focusing on modern design sensibilities, colour systems, yarn engineering, product diversification, pricing, packaging, compliance, and global market readiness. Weavers were trained to move beyond traditional sarees into home furnishings, uniforms, upholstery fabrics, stoles, garments, and contemporary lifestyle products, while also learning scientific costing, branding, GST, packaging, and quality compliance KPMG Bargarh Report. The intervention introduced minimalist, urban-ready Ikat designs, improving productivity, reducing weaving time, and enabling better margins for artisans by making their products more attractive to national and international buyers. The project established a strong foundation for integrating Bargarh Ikat into the global textile value chain, positioning the cluster for long-term growth, sustainability, and export-led opportunities.

Craft Village, as a National Entity committed to the promotion and preservation of crafts, played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and shaping the 1st World Craft Forum—an unprecedented global confluence of craft excellence and cultural exchange. Organized by World Crafts Council, Development Commissioner Handicrafts, EPCH in association with British Council, UNESCO the event has helped shaped global policy for Craft Sector. The Forum brought together representatives, master artisans, craft scholars, policymakers, and institutional leaders from over 25 nations. Craft Village’s leadership and strategic coordination were instrumental in curating this landmark event, which served not only as a platform for celebrating craftsmanship but also for discussing the future of crafts in the context of sustainability, innovation, and global collaboration. From planning high-level roundtables and thematic sessions to designing exhibitions, masterclasses, and showcasing living traditions, Craft Village ensured the Forum became a vibrant and inclusive space for dialogue, learning, and recognition of the intangible cultural heritage across continents. Its involvement reflects a deep-rooted commitment to positioning India as a global center for craft diplomacy and cultural leadership.

Craft Village played a pivotal role in driving the craft-and-design integration that inspired TITAN’s Jalsa timepiece under its luxury Nebula line, bringing traditional Indian miniature painting into haute horology. In 2019, Craft Village hosted a foundational design workshop where the entire TITAN design team, led by Prof. Somesh Singh, Sundeep Kumar, and craft master Shakir Ali, underwent immersive training in craft sensibilities and miniature techniques. This two-day program established the methodology for embedding artisan craft into high-end product design — demonstrating how corporate-artisan partnerships can create premium, culturally meaningful products and open new revenue streams through royalty-aligned collaborations.
Beyond the creation of a single product line, the Jalsa initiative became a benchmark model for how craft, design, and industry can work together at a strategic level. The collaboration demonstrated how artisans can be embedded into corporate design processes from concept to execution, enabling brands to create culturally rooted products while ensuring fair compensation, recognition, and long-term engagement for craft masters. This approach, pioneered through Craft Village, now serves as a replicable framework for future artisan–industry co-creation, licensing, and royalty-based partnerships across the luxury, lifestyle, and design sectors.
